António Câmara

ABOUT ANTÓNIO CÂMARA

António Câmara is a Retired Professor at the NOVA University of Lisbon. He was a Visiting Professor at Virginia Tech (1988), Cornell University (1988-89) and MIT (1998-99).

Antonio Camara pioneered research on virtual and augmented reality and geographical information systems. He has more than 200 international publications, including the books Spatial Multimedia and Virtual Reality (Taylor and Francis in 1999 and 2021), and Environmental Systems, (Oxford University Press, 2002). António Camara has supervised 33 PhD students at NOVA (FCT, FMH and IMS) and co-supervised 8 other students in international universities.

In 2000, Antonio Camara co-founded YDreams, a spatial computing company, and was the company’s CEO until 2015. YDreams developed over 1500 projects in 40 countries for 50 Fortune 500 companies. YDreams spin-offs include YDreams Global (a leading interactive agency in Brazil), Ynvisible (printed electronics) and Azorean Aquatic Technologies (aquatic robotics). He also co-founded Aromni (augmented reality) in 2016 and TUGA Innovations (urban mobility) in 2021. Four of these companies have been listed in international stock markets.

He published two books on his entrepreneurial experience: Voando com os Pés na Terra (Bertrand, 2009) and O Futuro Inventa-se (Objectiva, 2009). António Câmara has also co-authored 19 patents that have been filed internationally.

Antonio Câmara received twenty-one national and international awards during his career, including Premio Pessoa 2006 in Portugal, and one of the European Entrepreneur Awards by the European Union in 2009.

He is currently associated with Seixal Criativo, an educational initiative for high school students with its own R&D lab. António Câmara is involved in the development of the Internet of Nature, Human-Machine-Nature interaction research and an initiative to turn Portugal into a Builder Country.
